Good afternoon,

Watch out, Washington — Mo News took over the capital city this weekend for White House Correspondents’ events.

  • While Mosh has attended too many of these iconic “nerd prom” nights to count, this was my first, and it was an incredible opportunity to connect with some legendary D.C. journalists.

  • Beyond business, the real takeaway was that it was one of the least glitzy WHCD weekends in recent decades.

    • As the New York Times’ Michael Grynbaum put it, “This is a dinner that once attracted the likes of George Clooney and Steven Spielberg. On Saturday, it seemed as if the most au courant actor in town was Jason Isaacs” from “The White Lotus.” 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • President Trump chose not to attend, and the usual headlining comedian was canceled, making the night less internet-friendly.

Still, there were some notable headlines, including one reporter who called out White House correspondents for their failure under the Biden administration, as well as discussion of the “60 Minutes’” bombshell… which you can read about below ⬇️

🚨 ONE IMPORTANT THING

Trump Ramps Up Immigration Efforts As Polls Reveal Concern With Legal Ramifications

President Trump is signing two new immigration-related executive orders today. One directs Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to publish lists of “sanctuary cities,” where local authorities restrict cooperation with federal immigration officials. The other equips local police departments with military equipment as deportation raids ramp up around the country. It also allows the DOJ to pursue legal action against officials impeding their efforts — similar to the arrest made last week of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan.

  • Most of Trump’s immigration actions have been carried out through executive order. One exception was the passage of the Laken Riley Act, which allows the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of theft-related crimes.

  • As the 100th day of Trump’s second term approaches tomorrow, the administration is highlighting its immigration efforts as one of its biggest wins. Dozens of signs with photos of arrested migrants were even put up along the White House driveway.

AT THE BORDER
Since Trump was reelected, the number of people trying to cross illegally into the U.S. from Mexico has dropped steeply.

  • During President Biden’s term, nearly 250,000 migrants crossed the border in December 2023. After Trump won the election, that number dropped to 47,000 in December 2024. By March 2025, there were about 7,000 southern border apprehensions — the lowest on record.

    • Deportations remain steady, falling short of Trump’s goals. Given low numbers at the border, many of those deportations have come from within the U.S.

FIGHTING COURTS
Much of the pushback against Trump’s immigration efforts have been in response to the speed with which the administration has implemented deportations and concerns about a lack of due process — including his use of the Alien Enemies Act, the revocation of visas for student activists, and, most recently, the deportation of three American children alongside their undocumented mothers. In response to those concerns, Trump said in an interview with The Atlantic, “nothing will ever be perfect in this world.”

  • By the numbers: While a new CBS poll showed that 56% of Americans approve of his deportation program, an ABC/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that 53% disapprove of how the Trump administration is implementing those policies.

    • CNN’s latest poll saw a six-point drop — to 45% — in support for Trump’s immigration agenda from March.

  • Bottom line: The Trump administration is actively testing the limits of its authority on immigration, with many cases making their way through the courts.

🚨 ONE THING WE’RE FOLLOWING

Media Grapples With Coverage Under Trump As ‘60 Minutes’ Calls Out Owner On Air

CBS’s Scott Pelley used the end of “60 Minutes Sunday” to deliver a rare on-air rebuke of his own network’s parent company, Paramount. It followed the resignation of longtime “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens last week, after Pelley said the parent company “began to supervise our content in new ways.” He noted that no stories were blocked outright, but that Owens felt he had lost “the independence that honest journalism requires.”

  • The comments come as journalists face new pressures under Trump II — with the Associated Press fighting its ban from White House news conferences, the Pentagon limiting reporter access, and Trump suing multiple television networks.

  • At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday, the state of press freedom was top of mind. In a rare moment of self-criticism, Axios’s Alex Thompson called out himself and the rest of the press corps for missing signs of former President Biden’s decline.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT 60 MIN
Mosh spent nearly a decade at CBS News. There, Owens was only the third person to run “60 Minutes” in its 57-year history. The show notoriously operates with an extraordinary amount of independence, even from the rest of CBS News.

  • The latest drama comes as Paramount, CBS’s parent company led by Shari Redstone, seeks regulatory approval from the Trump administration’s FCC for a multibillion-dollar merger with Skydance — a company run by the son of tech billionaire Larry Ellison, who has close ties to Trump.

  • Trump is also suing CBS News for $20 billion, accusing “60 Minutes” of misleading viewers and harming his campaign by editing an interview with then-candidate Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign.

    • CBS’s critics allege that the aired segment made her appear in a more favorable light, while others note that TV interviews are typically trimmed for time and clarity. CBS initially refused to release the full interview transcript, fueling the controversy, but the FCC later did.

    • Redstone is allegedly eager for a settlement, while many at CBS are resisting that move and insisting the company did nothing wrong.

LARGER QUESTIONS AT PLAY
Many companies are facing growing pressure under Trump. Disney recently pushed ABC News to settle a lawsuit with Trump, and multiple high profile law firms made deals to lend the administration legal support to avoid his wrath. The question remains: how far will corporate interests go to appease the most powerful man in the world, and will they lose trust by doing so?

A Gallup survey from February found that Americans’ trust in traditional media hit its lowest point since polling began — with Republican distrust surging in the last decade.

ICYMI FROM THE 📲

In case you missed it… Former NFL coach Bill Belichick, 73, is kind of talking about his high-profile relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, a former cheerleader. She accompanied him to a recent interview with CBS and even jumped in to block him from answering a question about how they met. He gave a pretty awkward answer to some questions about this pic:

The media tour comes ahead of the legendary coach’s new book, “The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football.” In the book, Belichick refers to Hudson as his “creative muse.”
