Morning everyone!
If you live out West, you may be in for one of the “most rip-roaring white-water seasons in years.” That’s because white-water rafting gets a big boost from record snowfall totals this winter. That melt is starting to pay off.
Get after it!

🗞 APPLE UPDATES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Apple
Apple is trying to take us to the Year 3000 with a wave of major product launches and updates announced at it’s highly-anticipated WWDC conference.
APPLE’S VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Apple debuted its long-awaited augmented/virtual reality headset called Vision Pro. It’s the company’s most significant new device since the launch of the Apple Watch nearly a decade ago — and a big gamble that AR and VR are not just a fad, but the future.
It’s the first device you look through and not at. Your surroundings become an infinite canvas.
High risk, high reward. CEO Tim Cook said it’s augmented reality device will be a new kind of computer that blends the real world with the digital world. It’s a product category that many other tech companies have explored, but struggled to succeed in (Meta’s first Quest Pro was a flop; Samsung discontinued its Gear VR).
The device looks like a futuristic set of ski googles and allows users to interact in a digital world as if it’s the real world. It’s controlled by your voice, eyes, and hand gestures.

Sooo… what do you use them for?
The device allows users to experience movies, TV shows, and games an in a fully immersive universe. Apple demonstrated how users can even interact with their own photos or videos, blowing them up into a life size version in their own living environment. And at work, Apple showed off how it can replace a computer monitor.
When looking at someone wearing the goggles, you can still see their eyes. Apple included that feature in hopes it will help avoid isolation. If someone in reality walks by someone with the headset on, it will show the person in the digital scape. It also features a wired battery pack to put in your pocket that reportedly lasts you two hours.
But it’ll set you back a pretty penny. The Vision Pro will cost $3,499 when it launches next year. Here is a review from the WSJ.

Apple
More new tech: Apple also debuted a new 15-inch MacBook Pro and smarter AirPod headphones that can automatically turn on noise cancellation when it detects the user is in a noisy area.
UPDATE LOADING… 📱
On the software side, Apple introduced iOS 17, which adds an array of new features. Here are some highlights:
New safety features
A built-in journaling app so users can “practice gratitude”
A new smartscreen mode that turns your phone into a nightstand clock with other customizable widgets
Photos: face recognition technology can point out pets
It’s just “Siri” now. You no longer need to start with “Hey.”
NameDrop: AirDrop, but for Contacts. It lets two iPhone users share contact information simply by bringing their phones near each other. .
Sharper autocorrect and voice transcription… about ducking time
And the one we’ve all been waiting for… (Drumroll please… 🥁)
FaceTime video voicemails!
Even Tim Cook is fist pumping.

MESSAGES
Speaking of voicemails — Apple is also rolling out a new feature for when you don’t want to pick up the phone. Its “live transcription” feature will let you read a transcript of the message as a caller is leaving it in real time. So you can choose to pick up the call based on whether you like the tone of their message. Just like our once-trusted landline answering machines.
Text messages are getting significant upgrades with iOS 17 too. A new search filter will let you jump to messages quickly. Catch up quick arrows indicate where you last left off in a text thread. Another new feature, called ‘Check In,’ will share your live location with a friend or family member to let them know you’ve made it to your destination safely. When you’re not getting closer to your destination, Apple can share critical information like your battery level or cell service too.

WHAT WE’RE MOST EXCITED FOR
Autocorrect: New A.I. technology sharpens accuracy and word prediction. We are ducking pumped!
Smart Display: Your screen can transform into a nightstand clock and use other customizable landscape features when it’s propped on its side.
Journal: A new app that helps iPhone users reflect and “practice gratitude.”
Photos: The face recognition technology can point out your cats and dogs.
Realtime Voicemail Transcribing: You can watch in realtime and decide if you actually want to answer the call.
NameDrop: AirDrop, but for Contacts. It lets two iPhone users share contact information simply by bringing their phones near each other. Users can also start ‘SharePlay’ to listen to music, watch a movie, or play a game while in close proximity to another iPhone.
WHAT ARE ANDROID USERS SAYING?
“Welcome to the party.” Many of the iPhone’s newest features have been on Androids for years.

✔︎ Mo News Reality Check:
Despite the excitement surrounding the Vision Pro headset, there’s still a question about whether the headsets will help make virtual reality mainstream. As of now, Apple is projecting that it will sell 900,000 VR headsets in the first year. That is even down from initial hopes.
Notably, Meta is expected to launch its latest VR headset at a much, much lower price point: $499.
Apple’s stock price hit its highest level in the company’s 43-year history yesterday, reaching $184.36.
