One Republican senator and one Democratic senator are hoping they can find some common ground on gun reforms that will garner enough Republican support to pass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate.

  • Republican Senator John Cornyn (TX) and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy (CT) will meet virtually on Tuesday to "see if we can agree on a basic framework" about how to go forward on gun legislation proposals, according to an aide to Cornyn.

European Union leaders have agreed on a compromise plan to block more than two-thirds of Russian oil imports after Hungary opposed a total ban. European Council chief Charles Michel said the deal cut off "a huge source of financing" for the Russian war machine and put "maximum pressure on Russia to end the war".

  • The ban on Russian oil imports was initially proposed by the European Commission a month ago. But resistance, notably from Hungary, held up the EU's latest round of sanctions.

  • Other landlocked countries, such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic, also asked for more time due to their dependence on Russian oil.

Shanghai authorities will lift the city's two-month long lockdown from midnight on Wednesday, allowing private cars including taxis back on to the roads and people to freely move in and out of low-risk housing compounds.

  • "The epidemic situation in our city has been effectively controlled and the situation continues to improve," the city government said. People will still be required to wear masks, discouraged from gathering and encouraged to get vaccinated.

  • Shanghai imposed a city-wide lockdown on its 25 million residents on April 1 to combat the spread of COVID-19, exacting harsh measures that caused widespread public anger over issues such as crowded quarantine centers, difficulties in accessing food and loss of income.

  • The findings demonstrate the ability of the Omicron variant, especially its BA.4 and BA.5 sublineages, to infect those who already have protection against the disease.

  • Still, despite the proportion of positive tests nearing a record daily cases as the latest surge peaked, hospitalizations were well below previous waves and relatively few deaths were recorded.

The "multistate outbreak" has been potentially linked to organic strawberries branded as FreshKampo and HEB, the FDA said.

  • They were sold at several retailers nationwide, including: Aldi, HEB, Kroger, Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Weis Markets and WinCo Foods.

  • The affected strawberries were purchased from March 5-April 25.

Tom Cruise is getting people back to the theaters. Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick was released in 62 international box office markets this weekend, landing with a $124M debut.

  • This includes previews and is the best overseas launch ever for a Tom Cruise movie on a like-for-like basis, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Fallout by 28%. With domestic through Sunday, the global total is $248M.
