Good morning and giddyup,
Finland’s Hobbyhorse Championship recently took place with 2,000 attendees from 21 different countries. Hobbyhorse riding, or hobby horsing, consists of humans racing with stick horses and jumping over obstacles — a kind-of mimic equestrian.
The Finnish Hobbyhorse Association says there are about 10,000 hobbyhorse enthusiasts across the globe.
Finland has a knack for unique competitions. Think: World Wife-Carrying Championship, Heavy Metal Knitting Championship, the Air Guitar World Championships, and the Tree Hugging World Championship.
Maybe the competitions have something to do with Finland being named world’s happiest country annually!

🎤 BIDEN & TRUMP GEAR UP FOR A HISTORIC DEBATE

The first debate between President Biden and former President Trump is set for this Thursday — the earliest debate in American history and the first between an incumbent and a former president.
The two men, who faced off twice in 2020, and have agreed to two debates this year (June 27 and September 10).
Trump is alleging that Biden will be on performance-enhancing drugs on Thursday: At a rally over the weekend, Trump claimed, without evidence, that Biden will get "a shot in the ass" and be all "jacked up" for the debate.
THREE DAYS AND COUNTING
Flash back to the first Biden-Trump debate in 2020. Things got rowdy with Trump frequently interrupting Biden, and Biden snapping, "Will you shut up, man?" More than 73 million people tuned into that debate.
BIDEN PREP: The president is meeting with advisors at the Camp David presidential retreat this week, where he’s expected to stay until the debate.
Debate prep is said to start with informal discussions about topics, questions and potential responses and progress to 90-minute standing mock debates. The Trump stand-in for the mock sessions could be Biden's personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, who “played” Trump four years ago.
The president will likely be fueled by his favorite drink, orange Gatorade.
TRUMP PREP: Trump is not pausing travel nor campaign events and is not planning to hold any mock debates.
Instead, his debate prep has focused on rhetoric more than policy. He's been quick to show aggression in past debates, including speaking over his opponents and attacking the moderators, moves that stuck with some viewers in the months that followed.
At the debate, Trump is aiming to assure voters he can be a more effective leader than Biden, and that life was better for voters while he was in office.
What the prep boils down to: Former George W. Bush Campaign Adviser Karl Rove told the NY Times that the debate will be an inflection point: “Can Biden be consistently cogent, causing people to say, ‘Well, maybe the old guy is up to it?’ And is Trump going to be sufficiently restrained that people say, ‘You know what, it really is about us, not about him?’”
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Biden and Trump campaigns agreed to mic muting to avoid interruptions between turns. Each candidate will get a pen, pad of paper and water bottle. Pre-written notes and props are not allowed. Biden chose his podium position, while Trump chose to get last statement.
Where to watch: The 90-minute debate will begin at 9 pm ET on CNN in the network’s Atlanta studio—without a live audience—but it will be carried on dozens of other networks (ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC, etc.) and many streaming outlets.

⚖️ SUPREME COURT RULES DOMESTIC ABUSERS CAN’T HAVE GUNS; MORE RULINGS AHEAD
In an 8-1 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a federal law on Friday that bans people with domestic violence restraining orders from owning guns. Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas was the only dissent.
It’s the first time the court has ruled on a Second Amendment case since a 2022 decision that expanded gun rights outside the home. This new decision partially clarified the previous one.
THE LAW
At issue: A 1994 ban on firearms for domestic abusers. A federal appeals court had overturned that ban on Second Amendment grounds. The supremes reversed the lower court, letting the prohibition stand.
The case involved a Texas man who had a domestic violence restraining order after assaulting his girlfriend. He defied the order to turn over his guns and instead fired shots in public five times. After being arrested, he argued the Second Amendment should let him keep his firearm.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority that the provision at issue “fits comfortably within this tradition” of the US, because since its founding “our nation’s firearm laws have included provisions preventing individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing firearms.”
Data backs the move: Women are five times more likely to die in a domestic violence situation if a gun is present. Research shows laws preventing abusers from having guns reduces intimate partner homicide by up to 12%.

SO. MUCH. MORE. TO. COME.
The next round of SCOTUS rulings are set to come out starting at 10 am ET on Wednesday. Some of the most anticipated decisions are still to come. The cases include whether former president Trump has immunity from prosecution, if Jan. 6 rioters were properly charged, if federal rules regarding ER care includes emergency abortions, if a settlement following the opioid crisis is legal, and whether homelessness can be regulated.
Check out last week’s newsletter for a preview of those cases.
💵 ➡️ 💶 AMERICANS HEAD TO EUROPE, BUT THERE IS A DOWNSIDE

Americans head to Europe more now than 2019. Via: WSJ.
Americans are flocking to southern Europe, leading to an economic boom in countries like Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal — countries who were facing debt crises only a decade ago. The Mediterranean tourism boom have brought hundreds of thousands of jobs, and are boosting local economies.
Americans recently surpassed Spaniards as Portugal’s biggest group of foreign tourists. That’s, in part, because of more direct US flights following a deal between Portugal’s national airline and JetBlue’s founder.
Also helping lead the trend: A strong dollar. Americans are feeling like their money can go a lot further in Europe.
The EU, which has about 5% of the world’s population, received about a third ($500 billion) of the world’s international travel dollars last year.
LONG TERM IMPLICATIONS
At the same time, some economists and locals worry that the boom could lead to future challenges. While tourism is bringing in huge money in the short term, there are questions about how sustainable it is. The concern is these countries are focused on tourism at the expense of building up long-term industries like tech and manufacturing. And then, there is the issue of how increased urban rents (Airbnbs, etc) are making things unaffordable for locals, and forcing them to move.
